I came to these conversations wanting my stakeholders to see how it would help them if I concentrated more on myself, and I learned that they not only are all invested in me but want to see me invest as much in myself as I do in them. This was especially true of my community stakeholders. I expected them to want things of me, but most of them said the same kinds of things: “You do too much for others.” “You work too hard.” “You give too much of yourself.” “I would like to see you be as generous to yourself as you are with your friends.” “Sometimes you give so much that I sometimes feel that I don’t do enough in return.”
We talked about how investing in myself might benefit all of my stakeholders. I didn’t really need to negotiate as hard as I had anticipated. And I definitely hadn’t given my work stakeholders enough credit for being flexible and understanding. I learned that I expect more of myself than they do.
One of my stakeholders even suggested an experiment for me: to train for a triathlon with some friends and workout partners. I’m giving it serious thought. It’s an experiment that will help me meet objectives in all domains: I’ll be taking care of my health [which will also make my parents happy] while spending quality time with my friends—pushing each other and having fun together. Ultimately, this will help me to feel better and focus more at the office. I think that knowing I have an obligation to meet people after work will push me to work efficiently so that I can get home on time and meet my workout partners!
